Cooking Holidays in Maremma

Do you love Italian food and Italian cooking? Have you ever considered taking cooking classes in Italy, the country infamous for its sensational, delicious Mediterranean cuisine?

Our 7-day cooking holidays in Maremma, Tuscany  are specifically designed for those travellers not just seeking to experience the infamous natural beauty of Tuscany and hospitable culture of the Italians, but who are eager to learn the secrets of Italian cooking from the masters themselves – the Italians.

Italian cuisine varies greatly from region to region – even between places located just a few kilometres apart. Our cooking classes in Maremma offer you the chance to experience the unique tastes and smells of the local Italian cuisine and products of the Tuscan region of Maremma.

Experiencing cooking in Maremma

Our cooking holidays in Maremma are located in Pitigliano, a picturesque city in the Tuff Area. The Tuff Area was named after tufo, a volcanic, porous rock commonly used as a building material. The Maremma region itself features a breathtaking and diverse natural landscape including a deep blue sea, long beaches, black rockfaces, green hills dotted with woods, marshes and flat lands, and natural thermal baths.

While you are cooking in Maremma here you can discover the medieval architecture of the Etruscan and Roman ruins. Houses, tombs, roads and cellars have been carved out of the tuff as well as “tufi”, large square bricks used to build the villages and towns in the hilly Maremma area. On your cooking holiday in Maremma you can also explore the carefully preserved necropolises, the hot springs and spas of Saturna and the hills surrounding the river Fiora.

Thus, there are a mix of both natural and ancient historical architectural treasures to discover in the Tuff Area between your cooking classes in Maremma.

The city of Pitigliano itself has been inhabited since prehistoric times and is stunning and unique, boasting tower houses built on high cliff-faces which overlook the valley and mysterious caves and tunnels.

In Pitigliano you can find the Jewish Ghetto, also known as “Piccola Gerusalemme”, that is, “Little Jerusalem”, where a large Jewish population settled in the 15th century and where you can visit the Synagogue and the Jewish Cemetery.

As if that wasn’t enough to see on your cooking holiday in Maremma, you can also explore the Tomb of the Queen in the necropolis of Poggio Buco, or you can head out on a trek into the woods, following old trails and ancient roads carved in tuff.

Of course, Tuscany is not only famous for its delicious cuisine but also for its wine and olive oil. While you are cooking in Maremma you must try the sensational white wine typical of Pitigliano, the Morellino typical of the neighbouring city Scansano, or the DOC of the city Sovana, which you can find in the ancient cellars carved in the tuff. These cellars were often previously Etruscan tombs or natural caves. Meanwhile your cooking holiday in Maremma would not be complete if you did not sample the exceptional local olive oil, which has been stone pressured according to local tradition. If you have a sweet tooth, you can also try the typical biscuits and desserts of Pitigliano.
