Art city of Southern Italy, it is known as the “Florence of the South” or “Florence of the Baroque“: the very ancient Messapian origins and the archaeological remains of Roman rule mingle in fact with the richness and exuberance of the Baroque (typically of the seventeenth century) of downtown churches and buildings. The architectural development and enrichment of the decorative facades was particularly fruitful in the Kingdom of Naples and characterized the city in such a way so as to give rise to the original definition of Lecce baroque; during the visit, great significance have the many workshops of the famous cartapestai (papier-mâché moulders) of Lecce.
